European Dominance in Global Mobility

The fifth edition of the Global Passport Index (GPI) 2026 has confirmed the continued dominance of European nations, which occupy nine of the top 10 positions. Compiled by Global Citizen Solutions, the index distinguishes itself from traditional rankings by evaluating passports based on more than just visa-free travel. It incorporates 14 key indicators, including investment opportunities, quality of life, and financial freedom.

Sweden currently holds the top spot, followed by Switzerland, Finland, Germany, and the Netherlands. The report highlights that these nations offer their citizens not only extensive international travel freedom but also superior economic stability and high standards of living. Singapore remains the only non-European country in the top 10, securing the final spot through high scores in mobility and investment despite a lower standing in quality-of-life metrics.

India’s Standing in the 2026 Index

India has been ranked 125th out of 200 countries in the 2026 index, a slight decline from its 124th position in 2025. Despite this annual slip, the country shows a long-term improvement compared to its 127th rank in 2021. The index notes that an Indian passport currently grants visa-free access to 26 countries, while visas remain mandatory for at least 88, including major economies like the United States, Germany, and China.

Analysis of the data shows a mixed performance for India across different categories. While its ranking in the ‘Enhanced Mobility Index’—which accounts for 50% of the total score—slipped to 136th, the country saw notable progress in other areas. India climbed 11 places in the ‘Quality of Living’ index to reach 118th and improved by three spots to rank 100th in the ‘Investment Index’. Experts suggest that as passport strength is increasingly evaluated through economic and lifestyle lenses, India’s broader developmental metrics will become as critical to its global mobility score as its diplomatic visa agreements.
