The City of Edmonton has officially activated its extreme weather response protocol following a significant deterioration in air quality caused by regional wildfire smoke. Effective immediately, the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for the area is forecast to reach 7, placing conditions in the “High Risk” category on the 10-point scale.
According to Environment Canada, the smoke is expected to blanket the region through Tuesday, with conditions remaining volatile and subject to change by the hour. The city’s response, designed to protect vulnerable populations, will remain in effect until 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22. Officials have noted that this window may be extended if air quality does not show signs of improvement. Furthermore, the city anticipates transitioning directly into an extreme heat response starting Wednesday morning.
To support residents, the City of Edmonton has opened its libraries, recreation centres, and swimming pools as designated clean-air spaces. These facilities are providing free bottled water and N95 masks to the public throughout the duration of the event. Health authorities emphasize that the risk is particularly acute for older adults, pregnant individuals, young children, and those with pre-existing chronic health conditions, as well as outdoor workers.
Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed, avoid strenuous outdoor physical activity, and reschedule events where possible. Common symptoms of smoke exposure include eye irritation, sore throats, headaches, and coughing. Authorities warn that individuals experiencing severe symptoms, such as chest pain or wheezing, should seek immediate medical attention.
