A New Date for the Mogwai
Warner Bros. has officially rescheduled the release of “Gremlins 3,” pushing the film’s arrival in theaters from November 19, 2027, to October 6, 2028, according to Variety. The move adds nearly eleven months to the wait for fans of the iconic horror-comedy franchise, which has remained dormant since the 1990 release of “Gremlins 2: The New Batch.”
Despite the delay, the studio has sought to maintain momentum by releasing an initial teaser featuring Gizmo, the beloved Mogwai at the center of the series. The project, which was first announced by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav during a 2025 investor call, remains a high-priority title for the studio.
Creative Team and Production Status
The upcoming sequel boasts a significant creative pedigree, with “Harry Potter” director Chris Columbus set to direct and produce. Columbus, who wrote the original 1984 film directed by Joe Dante, is also co-writing the screenplay alongside Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, based on an original draft. Steven Spielberg is attached as an executive producer, continuing his long-standing association with the franchise through Amblin Entertainment.
Production is being managed by a team including Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, Michael Barnathan, and Mark Radcliffe. While the studio has yet to disclose specific plot details or the full cast list, the film represents the first major entry in the series in nearly four decades.
Strategic Scheduling
The choice of an October release date mirrors the studio’s past successes with high-profile autumn debuts. As noted by Cosmic Book News, the October 6 weekend was historically the launchpad for the 2019 film “Joker,” which achieved significant global box office success. Studio representatives have indicated that the rescheduling is independent of ongoing corporate merger discussions and was not necessitated by direct competition from other major studio releases.
