DAKAR (Azat TV) – Guinea’s bauxite exports surged by an impressive 25% in 2025, reaching a record 182.8 million metric tons, cementing the West African nation’s dominance in the global aluminum ore supply chain. This significant increase was primarily fueled by robust demand from China, which absorbed a record 74% of Guinea’s bauxite shipments, according to official data seen by Reuters and Chinese customs figures. The export boom underscores Beijing’s deepening economic influence over Guinea’s vast mineral resources and signals a notable shift in global commodity markets.

Guinean Bauxite Fuels China’s Aluminum Production

The dramatic rise in exports has solidified Guinea’s standing as the world’s top bauxite supplier, a position it first claimed in 2023 when it surpassed Australia, as noted by Fitch Solutions’ BMI research firm. China’s General Administration of Customs reported that the country’s bauxite imports jumped 26.4% in 2025, reaching 200.5 million tons, with Guinean supply being the primary driver. By November 2025, Guinea had supplied China with 150 million tons of bauxite, accounting for over 80% of the feedstock required by Beijing’s 45 million-ton aluminum smelting plants, a Citi note confirmed.

This close reliance highlights a strategic partnership, but also China’s tightening grip on Guinea’s raw materials. Beyond bauxite, China controls more than 60% of the giant Simandou iron ore project, which commenced production last year, and holds significant stakes in various gold and lithium ventures across Guinea.

Key Players and Market Dynamics

The mines ministry data revealed that 23 companies were involved in shipping bauxite from Guinea in 2025. China’s Chalco emerged as the leading exporter, shipping 22.1 million tons. Following closely was CBG, a company predominantly owned by a consortium that includes mining giants Rio Tinto and Alcoa, with 17.4 million tons. SMB, Guinea’s pioneering private bauxite exporter, and the largely Guinean-owned AGB2A/SDM joint venture each shipped 17.0 million tons. While exports saw a slowdown in the second half of 2025, they still posted a robust 16% increase to 84 million tons during that period.

The surge in Guinean output, however, coincided with China capping its aluminum smelting capacity, leading to a downward pressure on global prices. Shanghai alumina prices, for instance, fell by 48% in the first ten months of 2025, reflecting the market’s response to abundant supply amidst constrained demand for the refined product.

Economic Impact and Future Strategy

The significant increase in bauxite exports has translated into tangible economic benefits for Guinea. Bernabe Sanchez, principal mineral economist at Canadian consultancy CPCS, stated that the country is ‘finally seeing production growth translate into state finances.’ He cited projections from Guinea’s budget ministry indicating a substantial 40% rise in state revenues for 2025, directly attributable to the booming mining sector. The government is also proactively working to add value domestically; the mines minister informed Reuters in November that plans are being accelerated for the establishment of domestic alumina refineries and iron-ore pellet plants. This strategic move aims to reduce the nation’s reliance on exporting raw materials and enhance its position in the value chain.

Looking ahead, strong export figures are anticipated to continue, particularly as state-owned Nimba and Axis Mining ramp up their production capacities. Weekly ministry data for January 12–18, 2026, already showed substantial shipments of 4.9 million tons of bauxite and 175,880 tons of iron ore, indicating sustained momentum into the new year.

Guinea’s strategic leverage of its vast bauxite reserves, particularly through its symbiotic relationship with China, positions it as a critical determinant in the global aluminum market, while simultaneously prompting domestic efforts to capture more value from its resources.
