Strengthening the Goalkeeping Ranks
Sheffield Wednesday have officially secured the services of goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer on a one-year contract. The 27-year-old joins the club as a free agent following his departure from Scottish Premiership side Dundee United, becoming the Owls’ 11th signing of the summer transfer window.
The arrival of the Australian shot-stopper is part of a significant recruitment drive at Hillsborough. Maynard-Brewer, who previously spent eight seasons at Charlton Athletic, brings extensive EFL experience to the squad. His arrival, alongside the signing of Connal Trueman just 24 hours earlier, addresses a critical need for depth within the goalkeeping department following the high-profile departure of Pierce Charles to Manchester City and the conclusion of Murphy Cooper’s loan spell.
A New Challenge at Hillsborough
Maynard-Brewer expressed his enthusiasm regarding the move, citing the project’s ambition as a primary motivator. “I’m super happy to be here. It seems like a really positive environment,” he stated after finalizing the deal. “I had a good chat with Darryl Flahavan last week and he just sounded so optimistic about the season. Obviously, with being part of a big club, there’s responsibility that comes with that and the high expectations, which is to get out of this league and get promoted.”
Owls sporting director Simon Wilson highlighted the player’s background as a key asset for the upcoming campaign. “At 27, Ash has significant experience playing in the EFL… He has been a part of successful teams – either as a number one or two – and tested himself in different environments through several development loans,” Wilson noted. The club believes his maturity and versatility will provide essential competition for Joe Lumley and Connal Trueman.
Immediate Integration
The timing of the signing allows Maynard-Brewer to integrate quickly into the squad ahead of the new season. The goalkeeper could potentially feature in the upcoming friendly matches against Accrington Stanley and Oldham Athletic. Having made 12 appearances for Dundee United in the latter half of the 2025/26 season, he arrives match-fit and ready to compete for a starting berth in Henrik Pedersen’s setup.
