Legal Enforcement and Wildlife Protection
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) has secured a significant legal victory following a multiyear investigation into an illegal guiding operation. On June 2, 2026, a Pocatello man, Joelseph Jenkins, was sentenced in Teton County for a series of felony wildlife violations. The investigation, led by IDFG conservation officers, uncovered a scheme involving an illegitimate hunting sweepstakes promoted through an Oklahoma radio program.
Jenkins pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and felony possession of unlawfully taken wildlife. According to court records, Jenkins facilitated the illegal taking of five bears and four elk, profiting over $55,000 from the operation. His sentencing includes four years in state prison and a lifetime revocation of his hunting privileges, including a prohibition on accompanying other hunters in the field. He was also ordered to pay $9,750 in restitution and additional fines.
Fisheries Management: Salmon River Chinook Update
As IDFG closes this major enforcement case, the agency is shifting focus to seasonal fishing opportunities. The upper Salmon River Chinook fishery is scheduled to open on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Official data from IDFG indicates a total season run projection of approximately 2,100 adult Sawtooth Chinook, with a harvest share of 204 adult hatchery fish. Officials note that current migration patterns show a significant portion of the run has already crossed the Lower Granite Dam, with several PIT-tagged fish detected near the Elevenmile array.
Regional Fishing Opportunities
Beyond the Salmon River, IDFG continues to manage extensive fishing resources across the Treasure Valley. Stocking efforts for catchable rainbow trout began on June 1 and are continuing throughout the month. Popular family-friendly locations, including Julius Kleiner Park in Meridian and Wilson Springs Ponds in Nampa, remain active. Anglers are reminded to consult current state regulations and ensure they hold a valid license before participating in any regional fishing activities.
