Quick Read

  • Joey Chestnut secured his 18th Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest title.
  • He consumed 66 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the Coney Island event.
  • Miki Sudo won the women's division for the 12th time, eating 38.75 hot dogs.

A Return to Dominance

Joey Chestnut reclaimed his position as the undisputed king of competitive eating on Saturday, securing his 18th “Mustard Belt” at the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. The 41-year-old athlete consumed 66 hot dogs and buns within the 10-minute time limit, delighting a crowd of approximately 25,000 spectators on Independence Day.

While the performance was enough to secure the $10,000 top prize, Chestnut noted that environmental conditions made the feat more challenging than usual. “I knew like two minutes in… my face is woahh, but I didn’t want to let it bother me,” Chestnut told the New York Post following the event. His total fell short of his own world record of 76 hot dogs, set during the 2021 competition.

The Competitive Landscape

Chestnut’s victory marks a return to form following his absence from the 2024 contest due to a contract dispute involving a sponsorship with a plant-based food company. Patrick Bertoletti, who won the 2024 title in Chestnut’s absence, finished in second place this year with 50 hot dogs, earning $5,000. Australian competitor James Webb rounded out the top three by consuming 48 hot dogs.

The event also saw a historic performance in the women’s division, where Miki Sudo captured her 12th championship title by downing 38.75 hot dogs. The competition, held at the historic Nathan’s flagship restaurant, remains a staple of American Fourth of July celebrations.

Legal Context

Chestnut’s 18th victory comes amidst recent personal legal challenges. In April, the athlete pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from a bar altercation. Despite the ongoing probationary status related to the incident, organizers allowed Chestnut to participate in the event, which he recently described on social media as “the most patriotic sport we’ve got.”
