The stoppage capped an emotional turnaround for the contender, who entered the Octagon seeking redemption following an April defeat to Talita Alencar and months of open reflection regarding self-imposed psychological pressures.
Mindset Shift Before the Octagon
Prior to Saturday’s event, Polastri revealed to combat sports outlet Ag Fight that her entry into the UFC—following her second appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series—had been weighed down by heavy internal expectations. After dropping her promotional debut to Josefine Lindgren Knutsson in June 2024 and compiling a 2-3 record, Polastri realized that her desire to impress company officials and fans had compromised her natural fighting identity. In trying to force performances to build her “Psycho” persona, she had lost touch with her core training routines.
“When I entered the UFC, I put a lot of pressure on myself to impress people, the organization, everyone watching me, and to create this ‘Psycho’ persona,” Polastri told Ag Fight ahead of the bout. She noted that trying to alter her style for public appeal contributed directly to her performance freeze in April. The loss served as a turning point, prompting her team to strip away external distractions and focus entirely on strategic fundamentals during her Shanghai training camp.
High-Kick Stoppage in Shanghai
That technical reset proved decisive inside the Octagon. Facing Xiong, who was seeking her own rebound after an unsuccessful promotional debut, Polastri managed distance effectively before finding an opening late in the bout. Connecting with a clean head kick, the Brazilian flattened Xiong, prompting an immediate stoppage by the referee. The result gave Polastri a key victory while handing Xiong her second consecutive UFC defeat, dropping her promotional record to 0-2.
Weight Miss Forfeits Performance Bonus
Despite delivering one of the night’s premier highlights, the finish carried a financial penalty for the Brazilian striker. Both Polastri and Xiong missed the official weight limit during Friday’s weigh-ins. Under standard UFC policy, failing to make weight automatically disqualifies a fighter from receiving post-fight performance bonuses, depriving Polastri of a potential $50,000 Performance of the Night award.
Nevertheless, the victory reinstates Polastri’s momentum within the flyweight division. Having demonstrated striking power alongside mental resilience, the 28-year-old leaves Shanghai with a renewed tactical approach, even as her camp faces the immediate requirement to resolve weight-cutting management ahead of her next contract appearance.
