The 2027 Super Netball signing period has concluded with a high-profile controversy involving veteran Melbourne Vixens defender Kate Eddy. After seven seasons with the club, including two premiership titles, Eddy has been left without a playing position for the upcoming season after the Vixens withdrew a contract offer at the final stage of negotiations.
Eddy, who has appeared 101 times for the Vixens, described the experience as “heartbreaking” and the most difficult period of her career. According to her manager, Anthony Panozzo, the situation is particularly distressing because Eddy had previously declined interest from other clubs to prioritize her continued tenure with the Vixens.
Communication Breakdown and Club Response
The exact circumstances surrounding the decision remain unclear. While Eddy has characterized the exit as the result of a “breakdown in communication,” Netball Victoria CEO Andrea Pearman stated that the organization had intended to keep the defender. In a public statement, Pearman expressed disappointment that the agreement could not be finalized, though she confirmed that Eddy has been offered an off-court role within Netball Victoria to support her career transition.
“To be offered a contract with the Melbourne Vixens for the 2027 season and then to not, due to a breakdown in communication has left me shattered,” Eddy shared in a statement. Despite the abrupt end to her playing time at the club, Eddy has expressed gratitude for the support she has received from teammates and the wider netball community.
Impact on the Vixens Defensive Roster
Eddy’s departure is part of a significant roster overhaul at the Melbourne Vixens. She joins fellow defenders Emily Mannix and Rudi Ellis in leaving the club, alongside Maggie Caris, Lily Graham, and Zara Walters. The departures leave Jo Weston as the sole remaining member of the 2026 defensive unit. The Vixens have already begun adjusting their squad, confirming the arrival of Ash Ervin to bolster their defensive options for 2027.
As the signing period closes, Eddy remains without a professional playing contract for the 2027 season. While she has accepted an off-court position with Netball Victoria, she has maintained that she intends to continue pursuing opportunities to return to the Super Netball court in the future.
