The 11th-century Dormition Cathedral, a centerpiece of the UNESCO-listed Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, sustained significant damage after catching fire during a massive Russian aerial bombardment of Kyiv on June 15, 2026. Emergency services reported that the blaze covered approximately 800 square meters of the historic structure.
The strikes, which involved dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones, resulted in multiple casualties across the capital. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko condemned the incident as a “brutal assault on our people and our heritage.” In response, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that Ukraine is initiating formal procedures with UNESCO, demanding an immediate international response to the destruction of the site.
While the Ukrainian Embassy in Belgium highlighted the attack as an “unforgivable assault on cultural and spiritual heritage,” the Russian government has denied targeting religious infrastructure, attributing damage in civilian areas to Ukrainian air defense operations.
