As Motorsport.com continues its weekly remembrance series following the unexpected death of Kyle Busch at age 41 in May, attention turns to his extensive history at Phoenix Raceway. Across his storied career, Busch secured 16 national series victories at the Avondale oval, comprising three Cup wins, 11 O’Reilly victories, and two Truck series triumphs. Those successes formed a cornerstone of his record 234 career NASCAR national series wins, a milestone unmatched by any other driver in the sport’s history.

Throughout 42 Cup starts, 25 O’Reilly appearances, and seven Truck races at the venue, Busch compiled 17 poles, 35 top-five finishes, and over 3,700 laps led. His final victory at the track occurred just days before his passing, cementing a legacy defined by both dominant statistical achievements and volatile, memorable personality moments that shaped modern stock car racing.

The 2017 Media Room Silence and 'Everything is Great'

One of Busch’s most infamous media encounters occurred at Phoenix in 2017, arriving on the heels of a fiery altercation with Joey Logano at Las Vegas one week prior. Meeting reporters outside the NASCAR hauler, Busch declined to answer substantive inquiries about the feud, instead repeating the phrase “Everything is great” four times before walking away from the microphones.

The clipped dismissal instantly entered the sport’s cultural lexicon. The phrase was frequently invoked by fans, media, and even Busch himself during subsequent years, remaining a touchstone of his career durability right up to the start of the 2026 racing season.

Overcoming Penalties for a 2010 O'Reilly Comeback

Busch’s tenacity was fully displayed during the 2010 O’Reilly race at Phoenix, a night where mechanical and officiating hurdles nearly derailed his run. After losing the lead on a controversial restart, Busch was penalized for jumping a subsequent restart. Though he attempted to relinquish the position voluntarily, NASCAR officials enforced a pass-through penalty because the maneuver was executed too slowly, all while Busch battled ongoing transmission troubles.

Restarting tenth with just eight laps remaining, Busch mounted a furious charge through the field. He swept three-wide across multiple corners and surged past Brad Keselowski into second place with fresher tires just two laps later. After claiming the victory, Busch burned his rear tires completely off in celebration, telling Motorsport.com in Victory Lane, “All I know is that I paid NASCAR back by winning.”

Early Dominance and 2005 Championship Interference

Long before establishing veteran status, a 20-year-old Busch captured his second career Cup victory at Phoenix during the penultimate race of the 2005 season. Although he was not a contender in the championship Chase, Busch disrupted the title picture by becoming one of only two non-Chase drivers to win a race during the final ten-event stretch.

Greg Biffle dominated the majority of the afternoon, but Busch hunted down the leader with under 30 laps remaining to secure the win. True to his Rowdy persona, Busch used his Victory Lane interview to criticize NASCAR for restricting his celebratory burnouts while offering an apology to frustrated fans.

The 2019 Weekend Sweep

Busch secured his only career weekend sweep at Phoenix in early 2019, conquering both the Cup and O’Reilly Series events. On Saturday, he led 116 of 200 laps to win by three seconds, defeating runner-up Ryan Truex. He followed up on Sunday by leading 177 of 312 laps in the Cup race, edging out Martin Truex Jr. by 1.2 seconds to complete a dominant family-topping weekend.
