Incident Overview
LAS VEGAS (Azat TV) – A 30-year-old Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officer was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday following a shootout in the east valley. The officer, identified by local media and sources as Austin Abdelnabi, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the University Medical Center (UMC) by emergency responders.
The incident began just before 4 p.m. when dispatchers received reports of an armed individual acting erratically near a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue. Callers reported the suspect was waving a firearm and appeared to be intoxicated. LVMPD units, supported by aerial drone units, were dispatched to the scene to make contact with the individual.
The Confrontation
According to LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill, the situation escalated rapidly upon police arrival. The suspect opened fire on responding officers, prompting at least one LVMPD officer to return fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Despite heroic efforts by the Clark County Fire Department, EMS crews, and medical staff at UMC to stabilize the wounded officer, he passed away shortly after arrival.
Officer Abdelnabi, a Marine veteran, had been serving with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department since November 2023. His death marks the ninth officer-involved shooting within the department’s jurisdiction this year. The area surrounding Tropicana and Mountain Vista remained under a heavy police investigation throughout the evening as authorities processed the scene.
Institutional Response
Sheriff McMahill expressed deep grief, noting the emotional toll on the department and the community. Following the news, a solemn procession escorted the officer from the hospital, with various law enforcement agencies, including the Nevada State Police and the Henderson Police Department, issuing statements of support and mourning. Clark County officials have confirmed that flags at county buildings will be lowered to honor the fallen officer.
The investigation into the specific circumstances of the shooting remains ongoing. Per department policy, the LVMPD is expected to release further detailed information regarding the investigation within 72 hours.
