FALKIRK (Azat TV) – The M80 motorway southbound carriageway has been closed since the early hours of Tuesday, March 3, 2026, near Haggs, Falkirk, at Junction 7, due to an ongoing police incident concerning a person. The closure has caused significant traffic disruption, with motorists experiencing extensive delays and heavy congestion between Falkirk and Glasgow.
Police Scotland confirmed the closure, urging drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes. The incident, which began around 2:30 AM, initially saw the motorway shut in both directions for over three hours before the northbound carriageway was reopened. However, the southbound section from Junction 7 remains closed, with no immediate indication of when it will fully reopen, according to updates from Traffic Scotland and Police Scotland.
M80 Traffic Chaos and Commuter Frustration
The prolonged closure has led to what some commuters have described as “utter carnage” and a “car park” on the affected routes. Drivers reported being stuck for over an hour, with vehicles at a near standstill on approaches to the M80. Traffic Scotland issued warnings of delays up to 60 minutes for those travelling southbound from the M9, and even longer—up to 80 minutes—for those heading southbound from the M876.
Photos from the scene show a visible police presence, including uniformed officers guarding a property near the motorway, alongside backed-up traffic and police cones delineating the closed sections. The heavy congestion is not limited to the southbound carriageway; the northbound lanes, while open, are also experiencing significant delays due to the incident.
Diversions and Public Transport Impact
To mitigate the impact of the M80 closure, diversion routes have been established for southbound traffic. Motorists are being directed onto the A803 and B816, rejoining the M80 at Junction 6. These diversions, however, are also heavily congested, adding to the overall travel time for commuters.
Public transport services have also been affected. Stagecoach announced that its Glasgow express services would only operate as far as Forth Valley Hospital, pausing before resuming routes back into Fife. These services are unable to stop at Cumbernauld or Glasgow due to the ongoing disruption, forcing passengers to make alternative arrangements.
Ongoing Police Incident Near Falkirk
A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated that the closure is a direct result of a ‘report of concern for a person.’ While the nature of the concern was not immediately detailed, the substantial police presence and prolonged closure underscore the seriousness of the situation. Authorities continue to advise motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and allow for extra travel time.
The sustained closure of a major artery like the M80, even for an incident focused on individual welfare, highlights the immediate and far-reaching impact such events have on regional infrastructure and daily life, underscoring the critical balance between public safety and maintaining essential transport links.
