Thai qualifier Mananchaya Sawangkaew achieved a milestone victory at Wimbledon 2026 on Monday, defeating No. 20 seed Maja Chwalińska 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. The result marks Sawangkaew’s first-ever Grand Slam main-draw win and her first victory over a Top 30 opponent.

A Turn of Fate

The match took a dramatic turn when Chwalińska, a 2026 French Open finalist, held match point at 6-2, 5-2. During the crucial rally, the Polish player suffered a slip on the grass, which resulted in a right leg and ankle injury. Although she continued to play, the injury severely compromised her movement, allowing the 23-year-old Sawangkaew to claw her way back into the contest.

“I fell, and I felt my ankle,” Chwalińska told reporters after the match. “I wanted to continue, but I didn’t feel comfortable moving.” Despite receiving medical attention and strapping, Chwalińska was unable to regain her form, as Sawangkaew dominated the final six games of the match.

Historical Context

Sawangkaew, currently ranked No. 164, becomes the first Thai player to win a match at Wimbledon since Luksika Kumkhum in 2018. Her performance underscores a tactical maturity, as the Sing Buri native leaned into an aggressive, early-ball striking style to compensate for her smaller stature. “The only thing I can do is take the ball early, and then fight every ball best I can,” Sawangkaew noted.

The victory provides a significant boost for Thai tennis, as Sawangkaew is one of two Thai women competing in this year’s main draw. Should Lanlana Tararudee win her opening match, it would mark the first time two Thai women have reached the second round of a Grand Slam in the Open Era.
