A Symbolic Connection to DC History
As anticipation builds for the June 26, 2026, release of Supergirl, lead actress Milly Alcock has disclosed a hidden detail that bridges the gap between the new DC Universe and the franchise’s storied past. Speaking on the Raiders of the Lost Podcast, Alcock revealed that her character’s cape incorporates fabric sourced directly from the original Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeve in Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman.
Production teams reportedly discovered approximately 16 meters of the preserved material, integrating it into the back of Alcock’s costume. This gesture serves as both a respectful nod to Reeve’s legacy and a symbolic “passing of the torch” as Alcock takes on the mantle of Kara Zor-El in the rebooted DC era spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The ‘Supergirl’ Production Outlook
Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl is adapted from Tom King’s 2022 comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The film follows Kara Zor-El as she traverses the galaxy alongside her companion, Krypto. The ensemble cast features Jason Momoa as the bounty hunter Lobo, as well as Eve Ridley and Matthias Schoenaerts.
Despite the high profile of the costume, Alcock recently tempered fan expectations regarding screen time for the iconic suit. In an interview with Variety, the actress noted, “I don’t wear it as much as people will think. It’s a journey.” This suggests the film will prioritize character development for Kara Zor-El before she fully assumes the mantle of Supergirl. Following this release, Alcock is set to reprise her role in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for July 2027.
