An Exclusive Gathering at the French Open

Tennis stars Naomi Osaka and Taylor Townsend recently organized an exclusive private dinner in France for Black professional tennis players in conjunction with the French Open Grand Slam tournament. Titled the “Black Party (Roland Garros ‘RG’ Edition),” the event brought together prominent figures in the sport, including reigning French Open women’s champion Coco Gauff, veteran French player Gaël Monfils, doubles specialist Asia Muhammad, and commentator Chris Eubanks.

The gathering aimed to foster community and fellowship within a sport that participants described as historically isolating. However, public news of the private gathering triggered a wave of negative online reactions on social media platforms, with some commentators accusing the organizers of promoting segregation and questioning why demographic-specific events were being held.

The Defense Against Online Backlash

In response to the criticism, both Osaka and Townsend publicly defended their decision to host the event, pointing out the distinct demographic realities of professional tennis. Townsend, a world No. 1 doubles player and two-time major doubles champion, noted that the backlash itself highlighted the unusual scrutiny faced by minority athletes seeking spaces to connect.

“It caused a bit of a stir, which I thought was pretty funny because for so long we have been the ones that are the minority in a sport where we kind of stick out,” Townsend said, as reported by Total Pro Sports. She emphasized that the dinner served as a healing space where players could share their journeys, using social media posts to quote cultural figures and underscore the double standards present in public reactions.

Four-time Grand Slam singles champion Naomi Osaka also addressed her critics directly in an extended social media post, emphasizing her inclusive personal values while questioning the motivations behind the negative responses. Osaka, who is of Black American and Japanese descent, explained that growing up in the sport offered few visible role models with whom she shared a background.

“Growing up as a tennis player I didn’t see many people that looked like me and I feel like it’s important to celebrate them,” Naomi Osaka wrote. She further challenged her critics by pointing out the frequent occurrence of demographic-exclusive gatherings in society without triggering similar public outrage, asking, “What is it about POC getting together that unsettles you so much?”

Broader Context of Advocacy in Professional Tennis

The controversy arrives against a backdrop of ongoing conversations regarding diversity, inclusion, and mental health within professional tennis. Both Osaka and Townsend have maintained a visible solidarity on and off the court, supporting each other through high-profile career milestones and public challenges.

Osaka has previously used her platform to advocate for fellow Black players facing hostility in the sport. In 2025, she publicly condemned verbal abuse directed at Townsend by an opponent who disparaged her after a match, calling out the racialized nature of the insults in a predominantly white athletic environment.

Despite facing recurring scrutiny on social media, Osaka and Townsend continue to emphasize camaraderie and mutual support among players navigating the demanding professional tennis circuit. As the French Open progresses, the athletes’ defense of their private gathering has refocused attention on the systemic isolation experienced by minority competitors in elite tennis circuits.
