North Texas Campaign Stops Reveal Stark Differences in Talarico and Paxton U.S. Senate Bids

James Talarico and Ken Paxton speaking at separate campaign events in North Texas

Quick Read

  • James Talarico is prioritizing personal outreach, including a million pledge for Black voter engagement.
  • Ken Paxton is focusing on law enforcement endorsements and a security-centered platform to consolidate his conservative base.
  • Recent polls have shown Talarico leading, prompting Paxton to expand his campaign appearances across Texas.
  • Talarico’s campaign has increasingly attacked Paxton over his real estate holdings and voting record, while Paxton maintains a focus on public safety.

Differing Paths to the Senate

As the midterm election approaches, the race for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas has crystallized into two distinct operational models. Democratic nominee James Talarico and Republican incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton are utilizing North Texas as a critical battleground, yet their approaches to voters remain fundamentally divergent. Talarico, a 37-year-old state representative from Austin, has focused on personal engagement and direct outreach to underserved demographics, while Paxton has pivoted toward institutional reinforcement and aggressive negative campaigning.

During a recent event at Disciple Central Community Church in DeSoto, Talarico spent nearly 90 minutes fielding questions from voters. The event targeted Black voters, a key constituency that previously supported Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett in the primaries. Talarico’s strategy centers on visible presence; he has pledged to invest $25 million in Black voter outreach, framing the campaign as a partnership rather than a top-down mobilization effort. His rhetoric emphasizes responsiveness, acknowledging that his party must work to earn the trust of communities he admits have been historically taken for granted.

Conversely, Ken Paxton’s strategy is rooted in securing the traditional Republican coalition. At the Texas Sheriffs Association annual conference in Fort Worth, Paxton appeared alongside 22 sheriffs, highlighting a platform centered on law enforcement support, border security, and opposition to what he characterizes as his opponent’s “anti-law enforcement” record. Paxton’s campaign is increasingly focused on painting Talarico as an ideological extremist, attempting to make the election a referendum on his opponent’s viability rather than a debate over his own tenure.

The Stakes of Voter Outreach vs. Base Consolidation

Political analysts note that the candidates are playing to their specific electoral needs. Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston, suggests that Talarico’s investment in Black voter turnout is essential for Democratic success across the entire ballot. By contrast, Paxton’s focus on law enforcement and conservative validators is a calculated move to reclaim voters unsettled by his history of legal and ethical controversies, including a 2023 impeachment and recent scrutiny over his real estate portfolio and voting history.

The tension between the two campaigns has intensified. While Talarico has largely attempted to avoid naming his opponent to focus on his own platform, his campaign recently issued a sharp critique regarding reports that Paxton may have used a false address to vote and expanded his real estate holdings to 15 properties. Paxton, for his part, has refused to address these allegations, maintaining a strict focus on public safety and his security-centered agenda.

As the election nears, recent polling from Texas Public Opinion Research and Fox News, which showed Talarico leading, appears to have prompted a shift in Paxton’s strategy. The Attorney General recently announced the “Protecting the Texas Promise Tour,” suggesting he is moving beyond base-level appeals to reach persuadable voters in suburban areas. Whether Talarico’s “boots-on-the-ground” approach can overcome Paxton’s name recognition and institutional support remains the central question of the race.
