TIFF Market Expands Speaker Lineup
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced that Obsession director Curry Barker and Mattel Studios President and Chief Content Officer Robbie Brenner are joining the lineup for its rebooted TIFF: The Market summit. The event, scheduled to take place from September 10-16, will feature a series of ‘Visionaries’ and ‘Dialogues’ programs aimed at dissecting the current landscape of global cinema and film production.
Barker, who debuted Obsession in TIFF’s Midnight Madness sidebar last year, will participate in the Dialogues program alongside the film’s breakout star, Inde Navarrette. The pair is set to discuss the project’s unconventional journey from a low-budget production to a massive global box office hit, which, as of July 27, has grossed $458.4 million for Focus Features and Universal.
Industry Leaders and Global Perspectives
The addition of Barker and Brenner brings significant industry weight to the summit. Robbie Brenner, an Oscar-nominated producer known for her work on Barbie and Dallas Buyers Club, will reflect on her career and her role in shaping contemporary studio content. Brenner is also present at this year’s festival as a producer for the psychological drama The Housewife, starring Naomi Watts and Tye Sheridan, which is slated for a Special Presentation premiere.
Other notable speakers joining the market include acclaimed South Korean director Lee Chang-dong, who will discuss his naturalistic filmmaking style and receive the Ebert Director Tribute Award. Actor Gary Oldman, whose series Slow Horses sees its sixth season premiere at the festival, and Killer Films co-founders Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler are also confirmed to lead sessions. They join previously announced industry heavyweights, including Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chairs and CEOs Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca.
Navarrette’s Rising Profile
For star Inde Navarrette, the TIFF appearance comes amid a flurry of high-profile industry meetings. Following the success of Obsession, Navarrette revealed she has been engaging with major studios, including a recent meeting with Marvel Studios director Jake Schreier, who is currently developing the upcoming X-Men project. While the actor emphasized that many such meetings are preliminary explorations of potential future collaborations, she expressed a personal interest in the X-Men franchise, specifically noting an affinity for the character Mystique.
Geoff Macnaughton, VP of Market Programming & Theatrical at TIFF, characterized the current speaker list as a ‘sneak peek’ into the seven-day summit. He indicated that further programming and additional global industry leaders will be announced in the coming weeks as TIFF seeks to emphasize business-minded discussions alongside artistic presentations.
