A Long-Awaited Return to the Zombie Epic
Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed the development of a sequel to the 2013 global hit World War Z, marking a major turning point for a franchise that spent years in production limbo. Brad Pitt, who starred in the original film as Gerry Lane, will return to lead the project, with Edward Berger—the acclaimed director of All Quiet on the Western Front—tapped to helm the sequel, according to Deadline.
The original World War Z, which followed a former United Nations worker racing to stop a global zombie pandemic, was a significant financial success, grossing over $540 million worldwide, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Despite its success, the path to a sequel was fraught with challenges, including budget concerns and a previous, scrapped attempt to collaborate with director David Fincher.
Behind the Studio Strategy
The project’s revival follows a shift in leadership at Paramount. Since Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg were appointed as co-chairs of Paramount Pictures, the sequel has been designated as a high-priority asset. The studio’s commitment was further solidified at CinemaCon 2026, where executives signaled their intent to leverage major franchises, including World War Z, as part of a broader studio renewal. Skydance, which played a pivotal role in the development of the first film, remains a key stakeholder in the effort to bring the sequel to the screen.
The choice of Edward Berger as director follows a successful collaboration between him and Pitt on the upcoming A24 production, The Riders. According to industry insiders, Pitt personally championed Berger for the World War Z sequel during the production of their current film, with the studio finalizing the deal in recent weeks.
Production and Creative Direction
Dennis Kelly, known for his work on the British thriller series Utopia and his Tony Award-winning contributions to Matilda: The Musical, has been hired to pen the script. While specific plot details remain under strict wraps, the production will be spearheaded by Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, with Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner joining Pitt as producers. Berger will also serve as an executive producer.
This film represents a continued partnership between Pitt and Paramount, coming on the heels of the release of Heart of the Beast, a survival drama directed by David Ayer. With the deals for both Pitt and Berger now officially closed, the project is moving from development into active pre-production, signaling that the studio intends to avoid the lengthy delays that stalled previous iterations of the sequel.
