Pottstown officially unveiled a new memorial dedicated to Revolutionary War veterans on Friday evening, coinciding with the nation’s 250th birthday. Located on Veterans Island in Memorial Park, the monument was funded and installed by the Mahanatawny Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Parks and Recreation Director Michael Lenhart praised the local DAR chapter for their “lightning swift” fundraising efforts, noting that the group successfully raised $30,000 in approximately one year to complete the project. The dedication ceremony featured a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Justin Clement, the historic site supervisor at Pottsgrove Manor, who highlighted the town’s local participation in the war effort.
The memorial’s inscription honors the soldiers and citizens who achieved American independence between 1775 and 1783. During the ceremony, members of the DAR chapter read a list of local patriots’ names to whom the monument is dedicated. The event concluded with reflections on the importance of local history, with officials noting that the monument serves as a permanent site to ensure the contributions of these individuals remain part of the American story.
