A Surprise Collaboration in Sheffield
Pop icon Rick Astley made an unannounced appearance at Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park yesterday (July 25, 2026), joining the Stockport-based band Blossoms on the Sarah Nulty Main Stage at the Tramlines Festival. The collaboration centered on the live debut of ‘Joke About Divorce’, the lead single from the band’s highly anticipated sixth studio album, Songs From The Wedding Cake.
Astley, who also features on backing vocals for the studio recording and appears in the track’s official music video, joined the band mid-set, marking another milestone in a creative partnership that has evolved significantly over the past five years.
Building Toward ‘Songs From The Wedding Cake’
The performance at Tramlines served as a major promotional moment for Blossoms as they prepare for the launch of Songs From The Wedding Cake, which is scheduled for release on October 2, 2026, via ODD SK / Distiller Records. Produced by Shawn Lee, the album represents a key turning point for the band, who recently teased the project with a guerrilla-style pop-up performance from the back of a van outside Manchester’s 42nd Street Nightclub.
In addition to the Astley collaboration, the band’s Tramlines set included the first live performance of their recent single ‘Meet Me In Love’. That track features backing vocals from Declan McKenna, who is also slated to appear on the upcoming album track ‘Additional Driver’.
A History of Collaborative Success
The relationship between Astley and Blossoms has become a fan-favorite narrative in UK music. The partnership began in September 2021 at a London show, where the group performed covers of The Smiths’ ‘This Charming Man’ and ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’. The response to those performances was overwhelming, leading to dedicated concerts in London and Manchester that were critically lauded for their authenticity.
Reflecting on the success of their Smiths-themed shows, Astley has previously noted his genuine enthusiasm for the project, despite the inherent controversy of covering such iconic material. The band later solidified this bond with a secret set at Glastonbury Festival in 2023.
Looking Ahead: The Arena Tour
Following the release of Songs From The Wedding Cake, Blossoms are set to embark on their most ambitious headline tour to date. The UK arena run is scheduled to commence on November 26, 2026, at Cardiff’s Utilita Arena. The tour will visit major venues in London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow, with The Royston Club confirmed as the support act for the duration of the tour.
