Based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller, The Dog Stars stars Jacob Elordi as Hig, a former civilian pilot, alongside Josh Brolin as Bangley, his ex-Marine companion. The story follows the two men navigating the dangers of a desolate world after a devastating flu pandemic has decimated the majority of the human population. The star-studded supporting cast includes Margaret Qualley, Alison Janney, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong.
The screenplay was penned by Mark L. Smith, whose writing credits include The Revenant and Twisters.
