Russia and North Korea have officially inaugurated their first direct road bridge across the Tumen River, opening a new overland highway corridor along their shared northern frontier, according to reports published by Russian state news agency TASS on Monday.
The newly constructed border infrastructure provides the first direct vehicular link between the two neighboring states, expanding transport capability beyond pre-existing rail and aviation channels. The bridge is located near the historic “Friendship Bridge,” a rail crossing commissioned in 1959 in the aftermath of the Korean War that had long served as the primary ground link across the river boundary.
Addressing the ceremony via video conference, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin emphasized the strategic economic role of the new crossing. Mishustin stated that the expansion of cross-border transport infrastructure would provide a “powerful impetus” to trade, economic, scientific, technological, and cultural exchanges between Moscow and Pyongyang. He added that regular road traffic across the river is expected to stimulate regional development, encourage bilateral tourism, and create new employment opportunities within border municipalities.
Although proposals for a dedicated highway bridge had been discussed by Russian and North Korean authorities for several years, concrete implementation moved forward following high-level bilateral summits. The project agreement was formally finalized during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to Pyongyang in 2024, with active construction work beginning on both sides of the Tumen River in April 2025.
The completion of the roadway comes amid an intensified strategic partnership between the two nations, which has accelerated following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Beyond infrastructure and economic cooperation, Moscow and Pyongyang have forged closer defense and diplomatic ties, illustrated by North Korea sending thousands of military personnel to Russia’s Kursk region to support counter-operations following a major Ukrainian border incursion in 2024. The new road bridge establishes a persistent physical connection that supports both commercial supply lines and broader institutional alignment between the neighboring states.
