NEW YORK (Azat TV) – Samsung has officially announced the impending discontinuation of its native Samsung Messages application, signaling a major shift in how Galaxy smartphone users will handle text communications moving forward. The company confirmed that service for the proprietary app will conclude in July 2026, with all users being directed to migrate to Google Messages to ensure uninterrupted messaging capabilities.
Mandatory Transition to Google Messages
The decision to phase out the legacy app is part of a broader push to standardize the Android messaging ecosystem. Samsung stated that the transition is necessary to maintain a consistent experience across its device lineup. For users, this means the eventual loss of the familiar interface that has served as a default on Galaxy devices for years. Newer hardware, specifically the Galaxy S26 lineup, has already begun shipping without the ability to download the Samsung Messages app from the Galaxy Store.
Enhanced Features and AI Integration
Samsung emphasized that the move to Google Messages offers significant functional upgrades. By adopting the Google platform, users gain access to advanced RCS (Rich Communication Services) capabilities, which allow for high-quality photo and video sharing between Android and Apple iOS devices. Furthermore, the integration brings Google’s Gemini AI suite to the messaging experience, providing users with AI-powered reply suggestions and the experimental “Remix” feature, which allows for image generation directly within text conversations. Security features, including advanced spam filters and automated threat detection, are also highlighted as key benefits of the migration.
Hardware and Software Compatibility
The transition requirements vary depending on the device generation and operating system. Users operating on Android 11 or older will remain unaffected by the change for the time being. However, for those on newer software, the migration requires manual intervention if an in-app notification does not automatically trigger the setup. Samsung has advised users to set Google Messages as their default SMS application through the Play Store. Additionally, the company noted that owners of older Tizen-based smartwatches, launched prior to the Galaxy Watch4, will lose all messaging support following the transition, as these legacy devices are not compatible with the updated Google infrastructure.
