Saturday Night Live cast member Sarah Sherman has revealed a memorable backstage interaction with music legend Paul McCartney during the show’s season 51 finale on May 16. The 33-year-old comedian recounted the story during the 5th Annual Las Culturistas Culture Awards and in a separate appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Sherman, who has frequently joked about her mullet hairstyle being inspired by McCartney’s look during his Wings era, noted that the former Beatle approached her during the show’s closing credits. According to Sherman, McCartney, 84, reached out and pulled on her hair to ask if it was real or a wig.
“I think it’s very rare that somebody gets their mullet pulled by a Beatle,” Sherman told Jimmy Kimmel. She further shared that she expressed her fandom for his work, specifically citing his 1980 solo album McCartney II and the track “Temporary Secretary.” When she apologized for being overly complimentary, she claimed McCartney jokingly replied, “I love adulation. Adulate me.”
Sherman, who joined the SNL cast in 2021, has gained significant attention for her unique comedic style and recent HBO Max special, Sarah Squirm: Live + in the Flesh. The interaction has since circulated as a viral pop culture moment, highlighting the surreal nature of backstage encounters at the long-running sketch comedy program.
