U.S. Senators Patty Murray and Chris Murphy have launched an inquiry into the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding its recent acquisition of 12 aircraft. The senators are demanding comprehensive documentation, including purchase contracts, maintenance costs, and flight logs, by August 26, 2026.

The inquiry focuses on the use of funds from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), originally designated for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. The portfolio in question includes two Gulfstream 700 business jets, one Boeing 737-8 MAX, and seven standard Boeing 737 commercial aircraft. Lawmakers are particularly focused on the procurement of five luxury-configured jets, which have faced criticism from former officials and industry experts as wasteful.

The Boeing 737-8 MAX, which previously featured a bedroom, shower, and kitchen, has become a focal point of the oversight request. While DHS initially justified the aircraft as a dual-purpose asset for both deportation flights and cabinet-level travel, the department has since confirmed that the luxury bedroom is being removed. The aircraft will remain under ICE ownership but will be loaned to the Department of Defense to facilitate travel for cabinet-level officials.

Senators have also raised concerns regarding the use of the “EXEC1F” callsign for these aircraft, which has been associated with travel by the first family. The request for information has been forwarded to the DHS Inspector General, signaling a potential formal investigation into whether the agency’s procurement process and expenditure of OBBBA funds align with their stated mission requirements.
