Weather conditions disrupt semi-final performance
Singaporean national sprinter Shanti Pereira’s campaign in the women’s 100m event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow concluded in the semi-finals on July 28. Facing challenging conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, the 29-year-old clocked 11.40 seconds, placing her fifth in her semi-final heat and 14th overall, missing the cut for the final race.
The race took place under heavy rain and unseasonably cold temperatures, factors that Pereira noted as significant challenges. While she remarked that she is accustomed to competing in rainy conditions, the low temperature was an unusual hurdle. “I’ve never experienced something like this before,” Pereira said in a post-race interview. “Honestly, I was just focused on putting on as good of a race as I can execute, given the conditions. The rain was so heavy. I really had to stay focused on what I wanted to do.”
Building momentum for the 200m
Despite the disappointment of missing the 100m final, Pereira expressed satisfaction with her progression through the earlier rounds. On July 27, she secured her semi-final spot by clocking a season’s best of 11.24 seconds in the heats—a performance just 0.04 seconds shy of her own national record of 11.20 seconds, set at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships.
Pereira is now looking ahead to her signature event, the women’s 200m, with heats scheduled for July 29. She views her recent 100m performance as a valuable confidence boost. “It’s a really good confidence boost, I guess, for the next few days in the 200m,” she stated. Having previously made history as the first Singaporean woman to clinch a sprint double at the 2023 edition of the regional games, expectations remain high for her performance in the longer sprint.
Competitive landscape in Glasgow
The 100m semi-finals saw strong competition, with Australia’s Torrie Lewis leading the qualifiers at 11.00 seconds. The final was eventually won by New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs in 10.93 seconds, followed by England’s Amy Hunt (10.98) and Lewis (10.99). Pereira’s 14th-place finish out of 24 runners highlights the high caliber of the field in Glasgow, where margins between athletes remain razor-thin.
