A Historic Milestone at Naval Air Command
The Turkish Naval Forces have graduated their first female maritime patrol aircraft pilot, following the successful completion of rigorous flight training by Navy 1st Lt. Hilal Aydın, according to a report by Hürriyet Daily News. Aydın, who is stationed at the Naval Air Command in Kartepe within the northwestern province of Kocaeli, achieved the historic qualification after entering the armed forces with a lifelong ambition of military service.
Reflecting on her career path, Aydın noted that she grew up surrounded by military life because her father served as a noncommissioned officer in the Turkish Armed Forces. She officially applied for pilot training in 2022. After successfully navigating a demanding selection process and flight instruction program, she earned her wings as the naval branch’s first female aircraft pilot.
Previous Naval Duties and Career Background
Before transitioning to aviation, Aydın served aboard the TCG Gemlik as an operations and electronic warfare assistant officer and communications officer. Speaking about her journey, she emphasized that if she had not become a pilot, she would have wanted to continue serving aboard naval ships just as she did at the start of her military career.
Aydın also expressed immense pride in following a professional path parallel to Sabiha Gökçen, recognized historically as the world’s first female fighter pilot and adopted daughter of modern Turkish Republic founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (MigFlug). Aydın described Gökçen as one of the finest role models for young women aspiring to careers in aviation.
Broader Context in Turkish Military Aviation
The entry of women into Turkish military aviation has a complex history dating back to the 1930s, when Sabiha Gökçen trained on military aircraft through special programs because standard war academies did not admit women at the time (MigFlug). Over subsequent decades, barriers have gradually shifted, though milestone appointments remain notable events within the armed forces.
Aydın’s graduation from the Naval Air Command highlights ongoing professional integration within the Turkish military branches. As she assumes her new duties operating maritime patrol aircraft from Kocaeli, her achievement adds a contemporary chapter to the history of women serving in specialized operational roles within Türkiye’s armed forces.
