Strategic Advantage in the WKBL Draft

Incheon Shinhan Bank has solidified its position at the top of the Women’s Korean Basketball League (WKBL) rookie draft for the third year in a row. Following the official draft order draw held on July 23, 2026, at the league’s Seoul Gangseo-gu headquarters, the team confirmed it will exercise the No. 1 overall pick for the upcoming 2026–2027 season.

While Busan BNK drew the first position in the lottery, Shinhan Bank holds the actual priority right due to a trade agreement finalized in June. Under the terms of that deal, Shinhan Bank traded key forward Choi Lee-sam to BNK in exchange for guard Sim Soo-hyun and BNK’s first-round priority draft pick. This tactical maneuver ensures that Shinhan Bank remains the primary decision-maker in the draft, regardless of the lottery outcome.

Focus on Development Over Accolades

Coach Choi Yoon-a, speaking to StarNews, emphasized that the team is currently evaluating a pool of two to three top-tier candidates. Among these prospects are standout talents such as Im Yeon-seo, often compared to star Kim Dan-bi, and the Japanese-Korean prospect Kaneda Mana.

Despite the prestige of the No. 1 pick, Coach Choi remains grounded regarding the transition from amateur to professional play. “Being selected first does not guarantee that every player becomes a top-tier star,” Choi noted. “What matters most is how hard a player works after joining the team. Whether they succeed long-term can only be determined by seeing them in action.”

Shinhan Bank’s selection strategy aims to look beyond current reputation. The organization is prioritizing potential for growth, the ability to adapt to a professional environment, and a consistent work ethic. Having previously selected Hong Yu-soon (2024) and Lee Ga-hyun (2025) with the top pick, the team hopes this year’s selection will further accelerate their long-term generational transition.
