Simeone Defends Manchester United Ahead of Metropolitano Showdown
Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone has defended Manchester United ahead of their upcoming Champions League clash at the Metropolitano on Tuesday. As reported by ESPN, Simeone insisted that despite a run of form which has left the Premier League club sitting mid-table, United remain a dangerous, intense, and pacy opponent.
Manchester United arrive in the Spanish capital following a 1-1 draw against 10-man Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday. That result extended their winless run in the league to four games, leaving them with just six points from their opening six matches and placing mounting pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
Speaking in a news conference on Monday, Simeone dismissed the idea of underestimating their opponents. “We face an opponent that applies intense pressure in your half, closing you down quickly, and has players with speed,” Simeone stated. “Despite their recent results, including a lot of draws, they are still creating the kind of danger that they did last year. They’re a strong team.”
Atlético defender Dávid Hancko echoed his manager’s sentiments regarding the English visitors, recalling their third-place Premier League finish last season under Carrick after he replaced Ruben Amorim. “Last year in the Premier League, which is the best league in the world, they had a great season,” Hancko noted. “There are plenty of positives, even if they haven’t started well. They have great players and are undoubtedly a giant. We’ll have to play at 100% to win.”
Injury Doubts and Selection Dilemmas for Michael Carrick
Compounding their domestic struggles, Manchester United face significant fitness concerns ahead of the European fixture. According to the Mirror, the Premier League side made late calls on midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and defender Luke Shaw, both of whom were doubts for the trip after missing the Monday morning training session at Carrington.
Mainoo recently pulled out from international duty with England due to a combination of injury and workload management, leaving United keen to avoid taking unnecessary risks. His potential absence could open the door for summer signing Carlos Baleba to make his first start after coming off the bench against Tottenham.
Meanwhile, the lack of depth behind Luke Shaw continues to pose tactical challenges for the coaching staff. United attempted to sign Lewis Hall during the summer transfer window without success, forcing makeshift solutions whenever the England international is sidelined. Central defender Matthijs de Ligt also trained on Monday after a lengthy absence dating back to November 2025, though he is not expected to feature against Atlético.
High Stakes in Europe and Domestic Pressure
The fixture at the Metropolitano represents a crucial test for both clubs. Atlético opened their European campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool, whereas United secured an emphatic 4-0 victory over Sabah at Old Trafford. However, that European success stands in sharp contrast to their domestic struggles, which have seen them secure only two wins across their opening eight games in all competitions.
The European encounter marks the beginning of a punishing week for United, who face an away trip to face high-flying Leeds United at Elland Road on the weekend. Pundit Gary Neville emphasized the magnitude of the mental and physical challenge facing the squad. “If you’re not quite right there from a mental and physical perspective, you’re going to get found out,” Neville warned regarding the upcoming fixtures against Atlético and Leeds.
For Atlético, the match also provides an opportunity for star forward Julián Álvarez to regain his scoring touch following an injury-hit start to the 2026-27 season. Álvarez has registered only one assist—against Liverpool—and is yet to score in the league. Simeone backed the Argentine international to overcome his drought, emphasizing his broader tactical contributions beyond finishing.
