The Socialist International (SI) marked its 75th anniversary on July 3, 2026, commemorating its founding in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1951. As a global federation of socialist and social democratic parties, the organization used the milestone to reaffirm the relevance of the Frankfurt Declaration, which serves as the foundational text for modern democratic socialism.

Established in the post-World War II era, the SI was built upon the traditions of the 19th-century workers’ movement. The inaugural congress, chaired by British Labour Party General Secretary Morgan Philips, brought together thirty parties to formalize principles that emphasize democratic means to achieve social change. The declaration highlights a commitment to political pluralism, judicial independence, and the protection of fundamental human rights, including healthcare and economic security.

According to the organization’s official statement, the SI views the United Nations as a central pillar for international cooperation based on its Charter. The federation continues to operate on the premise that democratic socialism is an internationalist movement aimed at ending all forms of domination.

Looking ahead, the SI has announced that it will celebrate 50 years of its presence in Africa during an upcoming event in Dakar in November 2026. The organization maintains that the current global geopolitical climate necessitates a renewed mobilization around the core principles adopted in 1951.
