Production Shift on DC Studios Sequel

Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to direct the final weeks of principal photography on DC Studios’ The Batman Part II. The production had been temporarily paused while writer-director Matt Reeves stepped aside to attend to an ongoing family matter. Rather than a traditional director replacement, Soderbergh approached Reeves directly with an offer to help complete the shoot, establishing an unusual collaborative arrangement for a major Hollywood blockbuster.

Collaborative Setup and Remote Direction

Under the agreed-upon arrangement, production will resume in London under Soderbergh‘s supervision on set, while Reeves continues to work remotely from Los Angeles. The sequel is reported to be roughly two-thirds complete, with several weeks of filming remaining before principal photography concludes. Both filmmakers have emphasized that Soderbergh’s role is strictly to generate footage that matches Reeves’ established aesthetic and storyboards rather than to re-envision the project.

“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent,” Soderbergh said in a statement. “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”

Reeves Addresses Status and Studio Support

Following public reports regarding the production shift, Reeves took to social media to clarify his continued involvement with the project and express gratitude to his colleague. “Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography,” Reeves wrote on X. The filmmaker is expected to return to a hands-on role during the movie’s post-production phase in Los Angeles.

Executives at Warner Bros. and DC Studios have thrown their full support behind Reeves, who has guided the franchise since 2017. The wider universe developed under his watch includes the HBO spinoff series The Penguin and upcoming projects such as Clayface. The sequel stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, alongside returning cast members and new additions including Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan. The film is currently scheduled to bow in theaters on February 18, 2028.
