Sixteen-year-old Chinese wildcard Sun Xinran delivered a breakthrough performance at the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing, reaching the third round after defeating Cristina Bucsa before a hard-fought exit against world No. 4 Coco Gauff, as reported by WTA Tennis. The teenager captured international attention by becoming the first player born in 2010 to reach the third round of a WTA 1000 tournament, securing a significant jump into the top 450 of the rankings.
Sun’s run in her home tournament began with an impressive first-round victory where she won nine straight games against Eva Lys before the German retired due to a foot injury, according to WTA Tennis. She followed that performance by overcoming No. 27 seed Cristina Bucsa 6-4, 7-5. Overcoming an early second-set deficit against Bucsa, the junior world No. 1 showed composure under pressure to seal her first career win over a top-50 opponent.
A Fearless Mentality on the Senior Circuit
Reflecting on her rapid transition from junior success—including winning the US Open junior title—to the senior tour, Sun expressed unyielding self-belief. As noted by Punto de Break, the teenager remarked that she felt she was “not that bad” compared to higher-ranked competitors and that she did not focus heavily on rankings or statistical milestones. She attributes part of her technical and mental development to her training program in Shenzhen, which provided her with structured coaching and facilities.
That fearless approach carried her into a marquee third-round clash against Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff at the National Tennis Center. According to Tennis Temple, Sun went toe-to-toe with the American star through a tightly contested opening set that included a brief interruption due to blinking LED panels near the court. Gauff ultimately secured the opening set 7-5 and pressed her advantage in the second to close out the match 7-5, 6-1 in one hour and 29 minutes.
Looking Ahead in the Rankings
Despite the straight-sets defeat, Sun leaves Beijing with her WTA ranking guaranteed to rise into the top 450, marking a major milestone in her nascent professional career. Meanwhile, Gauff advanced to face Elise Mertens in the round of 16, leaving the young Chinese wildcard as one of the tour’s most promising rising talents following her historic fortnight.
