Quick Read

  • Brent crude oil traded near 5 a barrel on Monday amid ongoing supply constraints.
  • U.S. President Donald Trump stated he is weighing military action against Iran or a potential agreement.
  • Iranian officials confirmed that indirect diplomatic negotiations with Washington are continuing.
  • UKMTO reported a commercial tanker was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday.

International benchmark Brent crude oil hovered around $115 a barrel early Monday, sustaining multi-month highs as global supply constraints persist into the winter heating season, according to CBS News. The elevated energy costs arrive alongside persistent geopolitical friction in the Middle East, where indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue despite renewed military warnings from the United States.

Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is weighing a choice between pursuing a diplomatic agreement with Iran or taking military action to “finish them off.” Iranian officials responded on Monday by maintaining that indirect diplomatic contacts remain active, while asserting that Tehran’s strategic posture will not shift regardless of whether Washington orders a new wave of military strikes.

Energy Strains and Supply Constraints

The protracted conflict has severely disrupted regional energy infrastructure and maritime commerce. Intelligence firm Kpler reported to The Wall Street Journal last week that a shadow fleet of tankers holding Iran’s offshore oil reserves—previously sold to Chinese refineries throughout the war—has been entirely depleted. A rigorous U.S. naval blockade has prevented Tehran from replacing those crude reserves, costing Iran at least $25 billion in oil revenue according to U.S. Central Command figures.

Domestically, the supply squeeze has forced energy conservation measures. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf urged a national campaign on Sunday to cut domestic gas consumption by at least 10% as authorities anticipate severe shortages heading into the winter months.

Maritime Security and Regional Diplomatic Moves

Maritime security tensions also remain high in critical waterways. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center reported Monday that it received a verified late-time report of a commercial tanker struck by an unknown projectile while transiting outbound through the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, though the crew was reported safe.

Amid these mounting economic and military pressures, high-level diplomatic contacts continue in the region. Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are scheduled to hold security talks with Iranian authorities in Tehran on Monday. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei declared during a weekly briefing that the outcome of upcoming legislative elections in Israel would make “no difference” to Tehran’s foreign policy approach toward the region.
