A bitter California school board feud has escalated into a police investigation after surveillance footage allegedly captured a trustee secretly placing an electronic device beneath a shared desk, according to reporting by the New York Post. The controversy centers on the Temecula Valley Unified School District board, which oversees roughly 28,000 students and has a history of political infighting.

Surveillance Footage Triggers Boardroom Upheaval

Board members Emil Barham and Steven Schwartz stated they were stunned after reviewing security footage from a Sept. 22 meeting. The recording reportedly shows Trustee Melinda Anderson approaching their shared desk, kneeling down, and placing a small object underneath it while fellow Trustee Jennifer Wiersma stood nearby. Additional footage appears to show Anderson returning after the meeting to retrieve the mystery device.

“I was in shock; it was disbelief,” Barham told ABC7, as cited by the New York Post. Schwartz condemned the act as an invasion of privacy and demanded that both Anderson and Wiersma resign immediately, calling the behavior “sneaky and distrustful.”

Resignation Announcement and Harassment Allegations

Anderson announced on Oct. 1 that she plans to resign from her position, stating in an Instagram video that she began carrying a small microphone because she felt threatened and wanted to document comments directed at her. She accused Barham of repeated threats and harassment, expressing concern for her family’s safety and her own physical and mental well-being.

Barham strongly denied the allegations, challenging the existence of any threats or supporting police reports. Board President Joseph Komrosky characterized the clash as “pure politics among trustees at the highest level,” while emphasizing that any determination of criminal conduct rests with law enforcement.

Law Enforcement Investigation and District Response

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that deputies responded on Sept. 26 to the district office following a report of surreptitious recording. The Southwest Sheriff’s Station Investigation Bureau has taken over the case, though authorities have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the device or whether any laws were broken.

The school district released a statement acknowledging the ongoing investigation and the circulating video, while stressing that its primary responsibility remains supporting students and staff. As legal representatives and authorities examine the incident, the disputed device remains at the heart of an escalating governance crisis.
