Injury Concerns for Houston’s Leading Target
The Houston Texans’ wide receiver corps faces an early-season challenge as star wideout Nico Collins deals with a hamstring injury sustained during practice on Wednesday, Sept. 16. While initial reports from team doctors suggest the injury is not considered “serious,” according to information shared with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the two-time Pro Bowler’s availability for the upcoming Week 2 clash against the Cincinnati Bengals remains in jeopardy, as reported by USA Today.
The underlying reporting is available from usatoday.com.
Collins, who has served as Houston’s leading receiver for each of the past three seasons, has struggled with durability throughout his six-year NFL career. Since his 2021 rookie season, he has missed time due to a variety of ailments, including shoulder, groin, foot, calf, and hamstring injuries, as well as a concussion. His potential absence this Sunday would mark the sixth consecutive season in which he has faced an injury-related setback.
Impact on Roster Depth
The timing of the injury exacerbates existing depth issues for the Texans. The team is already operating without second-year receiver Jayden Higgins, who was ruled out for the season following an ACL tear during training camp. Additionally, fourth-year wideout Tank Dell remains on the injured reserve list as he continues his recovery from a significant knee injury sustained at the end of the 2024 season.
Should Collins be unable to suit up on Sunday, the Texans will be left with only four healthy receivers on their active roster: Xavier Hutchinson, Kayshon Boutte, Jaylin Noel, and Jared Wayne. The coaching staff may look to their 17-man reserve list for internal solutions, which includes rookies Lewis Bond and Daniel Sobkowicz, as well as Josh Kelly and Mitchell Tinsley.
Stakes for Week 2
The matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals carries added weight, as the Texans look to navigate a defense that demonstrated significant pressure in Week 1. ABC13 reports that the Bengals’ defensive unit forced four turnovers and recorded four sacks against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their season opener. Without their primary deep-threat option in Collins, the Texans’ offense will face a difficult task in sustaining drives against a disciplined Cincinnati secondary.
