The Maccabees: A Measured Return to the Studio

Following an eight-year hiatus, British indie rock band The Maccabees have signaled a strategic shift toward new creative output. During Radio X’s ‘On The Beach’ event in Brighton on July 28, 2026, band members Orlando Weeks and Hugo White confirmed that the group is actively composing and testing new material. This marks a significant evolution from their 2025 reunion performances, which were primarily focused on celebrating their established catalog, including tracks from Colour It In (2007) and Marks to Prove It (2015).

The band, which also includes Felix White, Sam Doyle, and Rupert Jarvis, noted that their current approach to songwriting is intentionally low-pressure. By performing live without the immediate demands of an album cycle, the band has created a space to refine new compositions in front of audiences. “We didn’t have any songs, and now we have some songs, and we have one that we’re really confident and we’re enjoying playing,” said frontman Orlando Weeks. Guitarist Hugo White added that the lack of a formal promotional campaign has allowed the band to reconnect with their history while gradually mapping out a potential future for the group.

Editors’ Path to ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’

Sharing the bill at the Brighton event, Editors frontman Tom Smith provided insights into his band’s ongoing trajectory. While The Maccabees are in the early stages of album development, Editors are nearing the culmination of their latest project. The band is scheduled to release their eighth studio album, Surface, Echo & Sound, on October 30, 2026. This release will be supported by an extensive UK and European tour throughout the first quarter of 2027.

Smith, reflecting on the band’s longevity, highlighted the influence of past touring experiences—specifically a 2008 run supporting R.E.M.—on his own approach to songwriting and performance. He noted that such experiences remain foundational to the band’s identity, even as they look toward the release of their eighth record.

The Role of Radio-Hosted Live Events

The ‘On The Beach’ showcase highlights a recurring trend in the UK music industry: the use of radio-hosted live events to facilitate artist-audience interaction outside of traditional festival circuits. For legacy acts, these platforms offer a balance between the necessity of commercial promotion and the artistic desire to maintain a connection with a dedicated fanbase. By hosting these performances, outlets like Radio X serve as a bridge, allowing bands to discuss career milestones, such as Smith’s reflections on his R.E.M. tour or The Maccabees’ appreciation for contemporary production, while simultaneously providing a testing ground for new material.
