A Highly Anticipated Return
The BBC has officially confirmed the return of its award-winning crime drama This City is Ours, announcing that the second series will premiere on Sunday, 25 October. To build momentum ahead of the launch, the broadcaster has released a brand-new trailer and promotional artwork, offering viewers their first detailed look at the upcoming installment, as reported by the BBC Media Centre.
Following the significant success of the first series, which debuted in March 2025, the show has cemented its place as a cornerstone of the BBC’s drama slate. The series, created and written by Stephen Butchard and produced by Left Bank Pictures, earned critical acclaim and secured BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Drama and Best Leading Actor for James Nelson-Joyce. According to official BBC data, the first series attracted an average of 6.2 million viewers, with the premiere episode reaching over 8.3 million people—a substantial increase from its initial overnight figures.
Plot and New Cast Additions
The new series picks up directly from the cliffhanger finale of the first installment. Michael Kavanagh, portrayed by James Nelson-Joyce, and his partner Diana Williams, played by Hannah Onslow, find themselves pulled back into the dangerous underworld shortly after arriving in Spain. They are forced to answer critical questions regarding the death of Ricardo, a pivotal event that concluded the first series. Back in Liverpool, the remaining gang members are struggling with internal tensions, while a new threat emerges: an old-school criminal from the era of the late gang leader Ronnie Phelan, played by Sean Bean, has returned from prison seeking compensation from the firm.
The second series expands its cast with notable additions. Shaun Evans joins the ensemble as Ozzie Thompson, a former gangster recently released from prison. Additionally, Álvaro Morte, known for his work in Money Heist, takes on the role of Felipe Guzman, a member of the Colombian cartel and the younger brother of the late Ricardo. Returning cast members include Jack McMullen, Julie Graham, Laura Aikman, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson.
Broadcast Details
All eight episodes of the second series will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer starting 25 October. For traditional broadcast viewers, the series will air on BBC One every Sunday and Monday at 9pm. Production for the series took place in and around Liverpool, with additional filming conducted in Spain. Sony Pictures Television is handling international distribution.
