Professional golfer Tommy Fleetwood is returning to his roots as he prepares for The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. To mark his homecoming, the town of Southport has unveiled a commemorative mural of Fleetwood at the Southport & Birkdale Sports Club, a project commissioned by Scottsdale Golf and created by artist Paul Curtis.
As he enters the major, Fleetwood faces a significant transition in his professional career. Having recently ended his long-standing partnership with Nike, he is currently operating as an apparel free agent. This strategic move allows him greater flexibility in negotiating individual corporate sponsorships, such as his current deal with BlackStone, rather than being tied to a restrictive all-encompassing clothing contract.
Beyond his sponsorship shifts, Fleetwood has become a prominent voice regarding the sustainability of the PGA Tour. During a press conference at TPC River Highlands on June 25, he expressed concerns about the mental and physical toll of the tour’s upcoming two-tier structure. Fleetwood noted that the intense schedule often leads to player burnout and physical strain, emphasizing that the current landscape requires careful management to ensure long-term athlete health.
