In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News at the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump characterized the current direction of the Democratic Party as a dangerous turn toward “radical socialism.” Trump argued that historical implementations of socialist policies invariably lead to “squalor, crime, and death,” and suggested the party’s platform has become increasingly detached from mainstream American values.
Trump’s remarks follow a series of primary defeats for established Democratic figures. Lawmakers including Reps. Dan Goldman (D-NY), Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), and Diana DeGette (D-CO) have recently lost their primary bids to more progressive or socialist-leaning challengers. Trump suggested that these internal shifts indicate that the party has moved significantly further left, moving beyond what he described as “normal” liberal politics.
Addressing the 2028 political landscape, the President also weighed in on potential Democratic contenders, including California Governor Gavin Newsom. Trump criticized Newsom’s recent public comments regarding his personal educational background, suggesting they reflect a lack of the sharpness required for the presidency. Additionally, Trump dismissed the current Democratic leadership, describing figures like Sen. Jon Ossoff and Texas Senate candidate James Talarico as ineffective representatives of their respective states.
Trump concluded that while he believes the Democratic Party’s current trajectory is “stone cold crazy,” he remains focused on the Republican Party’s legislative agenda, specifically citing the importance of the SAVE America Act in maintaining long-term electoral competitiveness.
