According to researchers examining more than 220,000 cases reported between 2000 and 2024, the rate of medication-related liver injuries surged by nearly 400 percent, rising from approximately 11 cases per million individuals to 53 cases per million.
The findings highlight a growing public health challenge centered on acetaminophen, the widely used active ingredient in Tylenol and hundreds of over-the-counter and prescription formulations. While pharmaceutical products accounted for the overwhelming majority of toxic incidents—representing 85 percent of cases among men and 94 percent among women—acetaminophen alone was involved in nearly one-third of male cases and almost half of all female cases.
High Hospitalization Rates and Escalating Risks
The clinical severity of these exposures is reflected in medical intake records: more than 80 percent of the reported liver injury cases required formal acute hospital admission.
