Defying claims of Kostiantynivka falling to Moscow
President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly challenged his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to prove his recent claims regarding the status of the embattled city of Kostiantynivka. During a diplomatic call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on July 4, 2026, Zelensky dismissed Kremlin assertions that the strategic Donetsk Oblast hub had fallen under Russian control as a fabrication intended to generate media momentum.
The confrontation follows statements from Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov, who claimed that the city, a key component of the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk-Kostiantynivka defensive belt, had been successfully captured. In response, Zelensky issued a sharp retort, suggesting that if the city were truly under Russian control, Putin should have no difficulty meeting him there to engage in direct diplomatic negotiations to end the ongoing conflict.
Military reality on the ground in Donbas
Despite the rhetoric emanating from Moscow, the Ukrainian General Staff maintains that Kostiantynivka remains under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Major Andriy Kovalev, a spokesperson for the General Staff, confirmed that while small groups of Russian infantry have managed to infiltrate the urban area, they have not established control. According to Kovalev, Ukrainian forces are actively conducting counter-sabotage operations and successfully repelling repeated assaults.
The city serves as a vital defensive node in the Donbas region. Since Russian forces first breached the urban perimeter last month, the area has seen intense, localized fighting. Ukrainian military officials report that on July 3 alone, the enemy launched 11 separate assaults on the city, all of which were repelled without significant territorial loss.
The strategic importance of the fortress belt
The dispute over Kostiantynivka is rooted in its status as part of the so-called fortress belt, which acts as the primary barrier against Russian efforts to seize the remainder of the Donbas. The city was once home to approximately 67,000 residents and continues to be a focal point of Moscow’s long-term military objectives in eastern Ukraine.
The use of high-level disinformation regarding the fall of Kostiantynivka reflects a broader strategy by the Kremlin to manipulate domestic and international perception of the front line, attempting to project momentum where the tactical reality remains a grueling, static stalemate.
