Qinwen Zheng advanced to the quarterfinals of the China Open on Tuesday with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Alina Charaeva, according to the WTA Tour. The match lasted 2 hours and 11 minutes and secured Zheng’s second consecutive quarterfinal appearance in Beijing.
The victory marks Zheng’s first tour-level win against Charaeva and comes just one day before her 24th birthday. Carrying forward the strong form she displayed at last month’s US Open, the Chinese player has now reached three WTA 1000 quarterfinals on home soil between Beijing and Wuhan. According to the WTA Tour, this achievement ties her with Li Na and Zhang Shuai for the most WTA 1000 quarterfinals by a Chinese player since the format was introduced in 1990.
Looking ahead in the tournament, Zheng will face either No. 6 seed Elina Svitolina or No. 21 seed Ann Li for a spot in the semifinals. The upcoming match will determine her progression as she continues her campaign on home courts.
