Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan officially inaugurated the northern section of the North-South Road Corridor today, marking the completion of the vital 84-kilometer stretch connecting Ashtarak to Gyumri. The project, which has been a centerpiece of Armenia’s infrastructure agenda, aims to transform regional logistics and strengthen economic integration between the capital and the Shirak region.
Engineering and Strategic Scope
The newly opened corridor was constructed in four distinct phases, encompassing the bypass of the historical site of Agarak, as well as the Ashtarak-Talin, Talin-Lanjik, and Lanjik-Gyumri segments. Financed through a collaborative framework involving the Armenian government, the Asian Development Bank, and the European Investment Bank, the road adheres to first-class technical standards. It features two 3.6-meter lanes in each direction and a 2-meter safety zone, supporting a maximum speed limit of 90 km/h.
Infrastructure as a Public Good
Beyond the asphalt, the project incorporates 19 transport hubs and 10 bridges, reflecting a modern approach to regional connectivity. By including 17 specialized crossings for agricultural machinery and dedicated underpasses for livestock, the design addresses the practical needs of rural communities whose livelihoods depend on unhindered access to their land.
