A New Jersey fireboat was destroyed on July 4 after a breaching whale collided with the vessel in Raritan Bay, forcing the crew to abandon ship in an emergency rescue operation. The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time while the Carteret Fire Department & EMS Division marine unit was returning from a routine security patrol in the New York and New Jersey Port area.

According to the Carteret Fire Department, the whale surfaced directly beneath the stern of the boat, causing immediate and severe structural failure. The vessel began taking on water rapidly, leaving the crew only seconds to evacuate before it sank. Nearby recreational boaters and a jet ski operator witnessed the event and intervened to pull the firefighters from the shipping channel. Additional support was provided by the Perth Amboy Fire Department Marine Unit and local firefighting unions.

Officials confirmed that all firefighters aboard were wearing personal flotation devices, which they credited as a critical factor in the survival of the crew. None of the personnel sustained injuries. The Carteret Fire Department noted that while the team regularly trains for maritime emergencies, an encounter of this nature was unprecedented. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing reports of a pod of whales seen in the vicinity both before and after the collision.
