NASA’s Artemis II mission has achieved a significant milestone in long-range space communication, successfully completing the first-ever “ship-to-ship” call between a crewed spacecraft near the Moon and the International Space Station (ISS) orbiting Earth. The demonstration marks a critical step in testing communication protocols for future deep-space exploration.

During the transmission, Artemis II astronaut Christina Koch connected directly with Jessica Meir, who is currently stationed aboard the ISS. The conversation was facilitated by NASA’s Mission Control, which coordinated the complex link between the Orion spacecraft and the orbital laboratory. The two astronauts share a history of collaboration, having previously performed the first all-female spacewalk in 2019.

This communication milestone coincides with the mission’s record-breaking trajectory. The Orion spacecraft recently reached a distance of approximately 252,752 miles from Earth during a flyby of the Moon’s far side. This distance surpasses the 248,655-mile record set by the Apollo 13 mission in 1970, marking the farthest humans have traveled from Earth since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

As the spacecraft prepares for its return, Commander Reid Wiseman has documented the journey with high-resolution imagery, including a striking view of Earth setting behind the lunar horizon. The crew is scheduled to conclude the 10-day mission with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, currently projected for April 11, 2026.

The success of Artemis II serves as a foundational test for the agency’s broader lunar exploration strategy. Following this mission, NASA plans to launch Artemis III to test critical lunar landing systems, with the long-term objective of landing astronauts near the lunar south pole during the Artemis IV mission in 2028.
