The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has officially announced the launch of the NSF State and Regional Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Hubs program. This $100 million initiative is designed to accelerate AI-enabled scientific discovery and innovation across a broad spectrum of academic and practical disciplines. By expanding access to computational power, high-quality data, and specialized AI resources, the program aims to democratize advanced technology for researchers, students, and educators nationwide.
Currently, access to cutting-edge artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States remains highly uneven. While elite institutions and major technology hubs possess significant computational capabilities, smaller regional universities and localized research ecosystems often face severe resource constraints. The newly announced NSF program seeks to bridge this computational divide by funding flexible state and multistate regional consortia.
Bridging the Computational Divide in Scientific Research
The core mechanism of the initiative involves the establishment of up to 10 AI Infrastructure Hubs, with a maximum of one award made per state or region. Rather than relying solely on federal funding, these hubs are structured to operate as collaborative consortia. They will leverage contributions from state and local governments, academic institutions, philanthropic organizations, and private sector enterprises to build and maintain top-tier scientific computing environments.
Brian Stone, performing the duties of the NSF director, emphasized the transformative potential of the program. “Artificial intelligence is transforming how we conduct research, accelerate scientific discovery and address complex challenges across disciplines,” Stone stated. He noted that the program is a vital component of a national mission to strengthen regional technological ecosystems and develop the highly skilled technical workforce required to harness AI effectively.
NSF’s role in this initiative is designed to be catalytic. Instead of funding the entirety of the hardware, the federal investment will focus heavily on consortium coordination, AI infrastructure workforce development, and specialized faculty training. This includes developing curriculum and training educators so that computational resources can be immediately and effectively integrated into scientific classrooms and laboratories.
Policy Foundations and the Genesis Mission
The establishment of the AI Infrastructure Hubs directly aligns with federal strategic planning. The program responds to key recommendations outlined in the July 2026 report, Science: A New Golden Age, authored by Michael Kratsios, Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The report laid the policy foundation for modernizing the nation’s research and development infrastructure, urging policymakers to expand access to high-performance computing to match the modern demands of scientific inquiry.
“American scientists deserve the world’s best tools to enable their most ambitious work,” said Kratsios. He highlighted that by pooling resources, regional partners can unlock computational power at a scale that no single institution or individual federal program could achieve independently. The initiative also supports the White House-led Genesis Mission, a broader national effort focused on harnessing artificial intelligence to solve complex scientific challenges, and aligns with the administration’s Fiscal Year 2028 R&D priorities.
Multi-Sector Collaboration and Industry Support
To ensure that the newly developed infrastructure translates into economic opportunities, each hub is expected to partner with local industries. This alignment aims to tailor workforce development programs directly to regional job market demands. NSF is encouraging the hubs to integrate with existing national structures, such as the NSF-led National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) and the Campus Research Computing Consortium, allowing local hubs to scale and share massive datasets beyond their immediate regional capacity.
The program has already garnered significant commitments from major players in the technology and philanthropic sectors. Industry giants including NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, and Dell Technologies, alongside organizations like Hangar and the Secunda Innovation Fund, have announced their intentions to support the participating regional hubs. The NSF has indicated that it remains open to additional private-sector and philanthropic partnerships to further expand the initiative’s reach and impact as the hubs begin their development phase.
