Carlos Alcaraz faces a challenging start at the 2026 Vienna Open after being drawn against former top-10 player and recent US Open semi-finalist Karen Khachanov in the opening round, Erste Bank Open reported. The ATP 500 tournament marks Alcaraz’s first appearance in the Austrian capital since 2021 as the Spaniard looks to rebound quickly on indoor hard courts following a third-round exit to Zizou Bergs at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
Tournament Draw and Top Seeds
The 52nd edition of the tournament, officially known as the Tennis365 report notes, will take place on the indoor hard courts of the Wiener Stadthalle from Monday, October 26, through Sunday, November 1. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, the reigning champion, withdrew from the event due to a knee injury, leaving Alexander Zverev as the top seed. Zverev will open his campaign against #NextGenATP wild card Martin Landaluce.
Alcaraz holds a 6-0 lead in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series against Khachanov. Should the second seed overcome his opening opponent, he could face either Jurij Rodionov or Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round, with seventh seed Tommy Paul projected as a potential quarter-final opponent.
Stakes and ATP Finals Race
Beyond the opening match tests, the tournament carries significant ranking implications. Top seed Zverev has an opportunity to secure the world No. 1 ranking for the first time; if the German reaches the quarter-finals in Vienna, he will guarantee himself the top spot in the rankings on November 2. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev, who is seeded third and begins against Daniel Merida, is competing in the Almaty semi-finals and looking to bolster his Nitto ATP Finals qualification hopes with a deep run in Austria.
The bottom half of the draw features a competitive trio of Nitto ATP Finals hopefuls alongside Zverev, including fourth seed Flavio Cobolli, fifth seed Alex de Minaur, and sixth seed Frances Tiafoe, who faces Lorenzo Musetti in a notable first-round encounter.
