A Change of Plea at Southwark Crown Court
American R&B singer Chris Brown has officially pleaded guilty to a charge of affray following a violent confrontation at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, in February 2023. The plea, entered at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, July 24, 2026, concludes a protracted legal process that saw the singer initially deny more serious allegations including assault and attempted grievous bodily harm.
Along with Brown, his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu—who performs under the name Hoody Baby—also entered a guilty plea to the same charge. In exchange for these pleas, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) agreed to drop the more severe charges of assault and attempted grievous bodily harm against both men. Judge Tony Baumgartner has scheduled the sentencing for October 26, 2026. Under UK law, the charge of affray carries a maximum potential sentence of three years in prison.
The Incident and Investigation
The incident occurred in the early hours of February 19, 2023. According to prosecutors, the attack was unprovoked and captured on the nightclub’s CCTV surveillance system. The evidence presented indicated that Brown approached music producer Abe Diaw and struck him over the head with a glass bottle. The assault continued as the victim attempted to flee, with prosecutors stating that Brown and Akinlolu pursued Diaw, punched him, and kicked him while he was seated and defenseless on the floor. Diaw required hospital treatment for injuries to his head and knee.
The investigation reached a turning point in May 2025, when Metropolitan Police detectives arrested Brown at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester. The singer had arrived in the UK via private jet to prepare for his ‘Breezy Bowl’ tour. He spent six days in custody at Forest Bank prison in Salford before being released on bail. His bail conditions were notably stringent, requiring a £5 million security fee and the surrender of his passport upon entry into various countries to facilitate his continued touring.
