A Disappointing Exit
The United States’ 2026 World Cup journey concluded in a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16 at Lumen Field. The loss was compounded by the early exit of star forward Christian Pulisic, who was substituted in the 59th minute after suffering injuries to his right ankle and knee.
The incident occurred during a challenge with Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans near the penalty area. Pulisic appeared to kick into Tielemans’ leg awkwardly, leaving him in visible pain. Despite his efforts to continue, the AC Milan forward was replaced by Sebastian Berhalter shortly thereafter. Following the match, Pulisic confirmed the nature of the double injury, describing the outcome as an unfortunate conclusion to his tournament.
Tournament Struggles
This tournament proved difficult for Pulisic, who struggled to maintain fitness throughout the competition. He previously battled a calf injury during the group stage, which forced him to miss significant portions of three matches. Entering the tournament as the USMNT’s primary attacking threat, Pulisic finished the campaign scoreless, contributing only one assist. Reflecting on his performance, Pulisic expressed frustration with his inability to influence the game against Belgium, stating he was disappointed in himself for not providing the necessary spark to help the team progress.
Looking Ahead
While the USMNT showed promise in group stage victories over Paraguay and Australia and a Round of 32 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina, the team ultimately struggled to contain a clinical Belgian side. Pulisic praised the support of the home fans and noted that the team remains a work in progress. He will now return to AC Milan to begin preparations for the upcoming club season under new manager Ruben Amorim, aiming to recover and refocus after a challenging summer.
